March 1 Record Temperatures
By Mark Shafer
Director of Climate Information
The Oklahoma Climatological Survey
3/2/2006

According to preliminary data from the Oklahoma Mesonet, 75 towns across Oklahoma set new record high temperatures on March 1. Another 5 towns tied records. The record heat hit statewide - from Woodward and Altus in the west to Miami and Idabel in the east. Temperatures soared into the mid-90s along the Red River from Tipton to Madill, and then northeastward up toward Tulsa. Lane and Newport (near Ardmore) led all stations with high temperatures of 95 degrees.

The attached table shows estimated maximum temperatures at long-term Cooperative Observer sites in Oklahoma. The estimates are based off of real-time reports from the Oklahoma Mesonet (www.mesonet.org), compared to historical climate records for towns and cities across the state. Actual reports from these small towns may not be available for some time. The Mesonet gives us an opportunity to compare events as they happen. A map showing actual high and low temperatures measured from the Mesonet for March 1 is also attached.
